Fireworks - To boom or not to boomthat is the question.... This certainly seems to be a hot topic these days. The lake is a place for some to enjoy the peace and tranquility and for others a place to let loose and have some fun. Fireworks are enjoyable to watch for the most part and have been around for a long time. But when is enough enough?? It used to be that they were only available for certain holidays and then they disappeared. Now they are sold almost everywhere, all of the time. We hear them almost every weekend and even some weeknights!
Besides the obvious environmental concerns - air and lake pollution - as a result of the heavy metals used to create the bright colours and flash, there are also the effects of the noise and light on our wildlife as well as our family pets. The loud noises are extremely disruptive and can cause major anxiety as well as loss of hearing. Fireworks have also been know to cause fires and personal injury. And what of the veteran who suffers from PTSD?
The BLA has posted some signage around the lake hoping that people will stop to think about fireworks and their effect on our lake. Please let us know what you think.

NEWSLETTER UPDATESome updates to info in our newsletter have been brought to our attention. Please see below:
1. Snapping Turtles in Ontario - the article referenced that snapping turtle species are still hunted legally. This is no longer correct. As of April 2017 the hunt for snapping turtles has been banned in Ontario. Please see the star.com article for more information
2. Baptiste Lake Fishing Guide - it was noted that you can fish for lake trout from Jan 1. - Sept 30, in Zone 15, which is where Baptiste Lake resides, but there is an (*) to these dates. In the Recreational Fishing Regulations Guide 2017, (p.68-77), on p.70 it states that for Lake Trout on Baptiste Lake it is only open from the 3rd Saturday in May to Sept 30.

SHORELINE REPAIR AND RESTORATIONWith the latest high water situation we have had quite a bit of our shoreline just wash away. Of course it is not all due to this last flood, it is the accumulation of years of erosion and the high water levels. With this in mind I googled shoreline repair and found tho following which might be of interest....
Firstly, information from Ontario.ca
Then a few interesting documents below. Hope this is helpful!

MESSAGE FROM HASTINGS HIGHLANDSDue to the significant rainfall and subsequent distribution of these waters, area roads have been greatly impacted. Multiple roads needed attention, the worst being Lake St. Peter Road that was destroyed(photo attached). Crews were out and had it repaired as passable that evening.
Sand bags are available at the Bangor Maintenance Yard that is located at 35523 Highway 62 in Combermere and at Herschel Works Yard at Y Road and South Baptiste Lake Road. There are various locations throughout the municipality seeing high levels of water and the forecast is not looking favourable at improving this situation. We have been staying in contact with local media and emergency services for both Hastings and Renfrew Counties, and providing them with information as it becomes available.
Attached is a checklist and we ask that residents be prepared for 72 hours in case of widespread flooding and road closures.
For after hours road emergencies--please call 1-888-408-5143.
