Purple Loosestrife
Purple Loosestrife is a hardy perennial that can rapidly diminish wetlands choking the wetland area
under a sea of purple flowers. The plant can also invade drier sites encroaching on farm crops and pasture land.
How to Identify: Individual flowers have 5 - 6 pink-purple petals surrounding a yellow center.
Plant has a flower spike of many flowers.
Leaves are downy with smooth edges
Stalk is SQUARE with 5 - 6 sides and can be 6' tall. Several stalks on a mature plant.
Currently located: On the north Baptiste Lake road and on Hwy. 648 near Highland Grove
Look-alikes: Swamp Loosestrife - No flower spike, individual flowers ring stem above leave pairs.
Firewood: flower spike BUT round stem
Blue Vervain: small purple flower with toothed leave edges
Winged Loosestrife: leaves alternate with small stems attaching to main stem
How to control: Dig and pull plants for small density infested areas. Cut off flower spikes and dry seed heads on medium density areas.
Biological and chemical control required for large density areas.
