Water Level

The water graph links below display the water levels (in feet) that MNR have established for Baptiste lake as measured at the dam at High Falls.

2008 water level graph as measured at High Falls
2009 water level graph - as measured at High Falls
These graphs show LEVEL at the dam pond! With high inflows, levels in other parts of the Lake will, inevitably, be higher. These differences can't be calculated. Perhaps, with accurate GPS, they could be measured at their maximum in the spring."

2008 water flow graph as measured at High Falls
2009 water flow graph - as measured at High Falls
These graphs show FLOW through the dam, i.e. OUTflow from the Lake. INflows to the Lake, from streams, precipitation, groundwater etc., never precisely equal these outflows, and therefore increase or decrease Lake level. Outflows over 1,600 CFS cause downstream flooding. To avoid that, Lake levels must be allowed to rise to the maximum until the inflows decrease.

Water depth guidelines as published by MNR:
######## ##### ######### #######
   Date         Low      OZ        Tar         Hi
Where:
Low =Low water level
OZ = Operation Zone
Tar = Target water level
Hi   = high water level
Local cottager readings in the
main lake, off
millionaires island 2008/09
The Normal Operating range - shown in green
- which includes the ideal water level, is the ranage in which most interests should be satisfied during the year. The range has been developed through an analysis of average water levels satisfactory to user groups and gauge readings experienced over the last 7 years of operation.

The High Water Level Zone/Low Water Level Zone - shown in red
- represents extremes in water level range. These are above and below the Operating Zone respectively. Water levels in the High Water Level Zone usually occur only at the peak of an abnormally high spring run-off or following an extremely large summer rainfall period and are og short duration.

The Operation Zone - shown in yellow
- represents mid-range water levels, both above and below the Normal Operating Zone in which inconvenience and minor damage can occur. Usually water levels in thse ranges are of short duration, except during prolonged wet or dry periods.

Operating Plan Checkpoints
1. January 1 freeze up to 7.80
2. March 15 drawdown (6.50 - 7.00)
Dependent on snow level, moisture content and general weather forecasts
3. May 1 high water level zone 8.50
4. July 15 summer optimum operating level 7.80
5. Fall trout spawning consideraiton 7.30

Fisheries Checkpoints
Lake Trout - fall drawdown to 7.30 and go no lower than 6.50 till Mar. 15

Walleye - restrict drawdown from April 15
Musky -       to mid July to less than one
Bass -         foot, then maintain to Sept. 1st
